BREAK ISOLATION – German Language Course for Refugees in Berlin
The Break Isolation German lessons were founded in 2013 at the occupied Gerhart-Hauptmann-Schule in Kreuzberg, along with Oranienplatz center for the Refugee protest movement. After the attempt to evict the school in summer 2014, we continued teaching in different refugee shelters and autonomous locations across the city.
Our lessons are free and open for everyone. Students don’t have to register, a residence title is not necessary. Everybody is welcome and can join the sessions at any time! Regular participation is appreciated, but optional.
HOW DO WE TEACH?
Our principles of teaching German are simple and different to conventional German courses.
Instead of classical teacher centered lessons, we try to work in small groups ideally with up to five students who have approximately the same language skills. We so have the possibility to pursue individual demands and focus on particular topics.
This type of teaching offers both one-time and continued learning partnerships. And of course a great chance to develop a personal contact over and above a teacher-student relation. Therefore we try to organize – aside from teaching-activities – get-togethers to meet, talk and simply have fun.
